obsession name: McQ Alexander McQueen – Broderie Anglaise Velvet Bell Dress

where to buy: net-a-porter.com

why the obsession:

I love subscribing to all kinds of email newsletters from a wide variety of sources – online retailers, vintage stores, department stores, magazines, etc. It’s one of the easiest ways to stay in touch with what’s new and what’s in the fashion world with little effort. Well, a few days ago, one particular exclusive piqued my interest, from net-a-porter.com, reading:

Net-A-Porter

McQ Alexander McQueen Exclusive

Own a piece of fashion history with McQ Alexander McQueen’s debut runway collection

For seven days only, you have the chance to order from Sarah Burton’s McQ Alexander McQueen’s debut runway collection

Whoa, whoa. The minute you put the words “own a piece of fashion history”, “Alexander McQueen”, and “debut runway collection” – they might as well have said that Christmas is coming in the summer.

I read on:

Your order will be made especially for you at the Alexander McQueen atelier in Italy and will be delivered in time for fall. One of the most talked about collections of the season, expect flawless workmanship and couture-like detailing. These limited edition pieces are only available at NET-A-PORTER from our private order service.

A private order service? Made especially by Alexander McQueen ateliers in Italy? This is INCREDIBLY AMAZING that something like this is available to regular customers worldwide (with the appropriate dough of course). Isn’t this kind of service only available to movie stars? I mean, how many opportunities do you get to have a McQ Alexander McQueen (provided, this is the “lower-priced diffusion” line) runway piece (debut collection, no less) especially tailored to you, regular old you?

Of course, it is even more amazing that the pieces are AMAZING in their own way. From this collection, I’m particularly obsessed with the velvet bell dress. That embroidery is absolutely incredible (I believe we can reference the couture-like detailing here). The richness of the velvet, the bell shape, the fantasy that it evokes, the grunge/beauty combination - such McQueen classic signatures. I feel like this dress is straight out of an Ann Rice novel, only to be worn by those ever-glamorous vampire queens. I bet Evan Rachel Wood/Queen Sophie Anne could totally rock this dress. And I would be totally jealous.

This private order service ends today, so for those of you that can actually buy such pieces, I wouldn’t waste any more time and head over to net-a-porter.com.

twin obsession:

The McQ Alexander McQueen Mouline-Knit dress from the same net-a-porter collection! (This tactile piece was crafted on an extremely rare knitting machine in Italy that replicates hand-weaving techniques to create highly complex patterns and design) Oh, can a girl dream…
